John McGuire
Head of Peak Sports Academy
John McGuire has been coaching since 1999 and has coached basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, and track. He graduated from New Jersey City University with a degree in History and focus on Education (Graduated Cum Laude). Holds a Masters degree in Educational leadership (Administration) from Walden University (Graduated Cum Laude). John was an educator since 1996-2013 (Elizabeth middle school social studies). Hoops There It Is Basketball was created in 2006 as a summer camp. In 2008/2009 the clinic and AAU programs were formed. Coach McGuire has seen amazing growth in players, families, culture, and overall performance. He is proud of the community first approach and the active community membership. He believes Hoops There It Is (and now Peak Sports Academy) is a sports community where all are welcome. We demand the best of each player and family as we strive to be better everyday. Together we can achieve greatness, one player at a time. We are an active and caring community. Bringing the joy of sports back to the youth.
Craig West
Lead Basketball Trainer
Coach West joined this program’s coaching staff in 2016. After completing his schooling career, playing basketball in both middle school and high school, Coach West attended the New York Knicks camp, AND1 camp, as well as the NJ Nets camp. Over the years he had amazing coaches who inspired him to be the coach and trainer that he is today. Coach West's love for basketball has allowed him to educate himself and study basketball at an intense level. He strategizes every movement within the body and adds his own experiences to build a great basketball player. Coach West is a relentless worker, never letting a moment pass him by. He works hard and encourages everyone he meets to be as passionate as he is. He is currently pursuing his education in Personal Training and Youth Fitness Training. He is an irreplaceable asset to our team.
Michael Monahan
Lead Basketball Coach
Coach Mike graduated from St. Joseph High School in Metuchen; The Catholic University of America with a degree in Political Science and Law concentration; and Fairleigh Dickinson University with a Master of Sports Administration degree. Mike joined this program's staff in the summer of 2017 as both a coach and as an administrator. He has served as a youth basketball coach for over nine years at the recreation, PAL/Travel, and AAU levels . Mike holds a USA Basketball Coaching License and a Rutgers Safety Certification. He takes pride in working with players of all ages and of all skill levels to help each individual player reach their specific goals. He is dedicated to his love of basketball and the profound impact it can make on a player’s life. Mike is a huge part of our team.
Jarell Thomas
Basketball Coach
Coach Jarell graduated from Union High School and Kean University earning a degree in Physical Education and Health/Teacher Ceritification P-12. He joined our staff in April 2018. He is a Union, New Jersey native that played basketball at Union High School, and currently plays in local men's basketball leagues. He has a NCSF Personal Trainer Certification. Through his knowledge of basketball and the studies of health and wellness, Jarell provides our players with many tools to succeed in their careers. He helps guide them down the path of hard work, strategic movement, and success on and off the court. He is a valuable member of our team.
Shaqir Sims
Basketball Coach
Coach Shaq graduated from Union High School and Kean University with a degree in Physical Education/Exercise Science. Shaq played basketball for Union High School , and is a recent graduate of Kean University with a degree in Physical Education/Exercise Science. He also recently earned a NCSF personal trainer certificate in May 2020. During his free time, Shaq enjoys playing basketball in various men’s leagues. He takes pride in being energetic, enthusiastic, engaging and positive when working with players.
Joel McIntosh
Basketball Coach
Coach Joel graduated from Newark Tech High School and La Roche University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he played 4 years and scored over 1,100 points. He graduated college with a degree in Business and a minor in Marketing. After college, he continued to play basketball professionally in Europe, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Panama, and also playing as a national for Antigua & Barbuda. He is looking forward to giving back by sharing his love and knowledge of the game; his experiences playing in college and professionally; and to be part of a community that is focused on youth development.
Alexandria Kerr
Basketball Coach
Coach Kerr graduated from Montclair High School as a member of the National Honors Society, the captain of the varsity basketball team for 3 years and a 1000+ point scorer. She continued her academic and athletic career at the University of New Haven where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and her Master’s degree in Taxation. She was also a Peer Business Tutor and an Academic Peer Mentor. Athletically, she started every game of her basketball career at the University, scoring 1,500 career points and grabbing 500+ rebounds. She was the captain of the team 3 of her 4 years at school. She then went on to play overseas in Melilla, Spain. She has coached at clinics and mentored both boys and girls for the last 7 years of her career; working and volunteering her time to enhance the youths’ basketball, physical, and mental skills. Her love for basketball has allowed her to travel and see different parts of the world. Coach Kerr wants to use her experience to leave a lasting impact on the youth.
Christian Holandez
Basketball Coach
Coach Christian graduated from Kean University earning a degree in Biology and Secondary Education. He has been with Peaks Sports Academy since Spring 2020. Basketball has been a passion of his since he was young. In 2018, he decided to start coaching. He began as an assistant coach for Orange Avenue School in Cranford for the 2018-2019 season. For the 2019-2020 season, he coached the boy’s middle school basketball team at Hillside Avenue School in Cranford. Christian specializes in point guard skills and fitness development which includes ball handling, decision making, and finishing at the rim. Christian is passionate about mentoring and helping his players to become the best athletes they can be on and off the court.
Brian Lane
Basketball Coach
Coach Brian was born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey and graduated from Marist High School and New Jersey City University with a degree in Business Management. Brian was the captain of the Marist High School Varsity basketball team and played some of the top competition in Hudson County. In addition, he was coached and trained by legendary Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley in grammar school. He has been involved in basketball since he was 4 years old, either playing, coaching or as a referee. Brian has three daughters that play both travel soccer and basketball and has devoted a lot of this time over the past 5 years towards their development. Brian is extremely excited about the opportunity to get back into coaching and doing whatever else is required to make Peak Sports Academy the best training facility it can be.
Ron Royster
Basketball Coach
Coach Ron played baseball and basketball at Nyack High School in New York. He went on to play college baseball at Quinnipiac College and graduated with a degree in Mass Communications. After many years working in the television industry, he realized teaching was his true calling. He received a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Mercy College. He currently teaches 6th grade math and science. Although he played baseball in college, basketball is his passion. He grew up watching his father referee basketball games for over 40 years. He has been with Hoops There It Is since 2011 as a coach, summer camp counselor, and parent- and is looking forward to joining the Peak Sports Academy community.
Morgan Mende
Director of Volleyball
Morgan has been coaching volleyball since 2013 in a variety of capacities and has a strong passion for the sport. Morgan played volleyball at Rowan University where she served as the team's captain and was All-Region and All-Conference. She is a middle school Health and Physical Education teacher, having earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Health and a master’s degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Sports Administration and Coaching.
